Yup, you could boost your business simply by managing programs and projects more effectively and efficiently.
And it doesn’t have to be hard to make PM gains!
Today, we’re talking about a game-changing topic. One that can revolutionize the way you work: program and project management. This is a perfect complement to recent discussions (via email — subscribe to the list? — and the blog) on time management.
And, it’s close to my heart as I have a degree in Operations Management and a certificate in Program & Project Management. Plus, PM has been woven into pretty much everything I’ve done professionally and extracurricularly….
You may be thinking, “Isn’t program and project management just for big corporations?” To that, I’d have to say an emphatic “NO!” Program and project management is just as crucial for small businesses like ours.
Let’s dive in and discover why!
Programs & Projects 101
Let’s start with a few definitions so we’re on the same page. In simple terms:
- Program. Programs are “containers” that have a defined starting point but may not have a defined endpoint. i.e., They may be ongoing indefinitely. Programs are made up of multiple projects and tasks.
- Project. Projects are “containers” with defined beginning and finishing points (usually dates). Projects are composed of multiple tasks.
- Task. Tasks are the basic “building blocks” of projects and programs. They’re the activities you do to move yourself/your project/your program closer to stated goals.
Programs, projects, and tasks generally have defined inputs, outputs/deliverables, scope, and allocated resources (e.g., time, money, people, etc.)
Understanding Program & Project Management
Program and project management involve planning, organizing, and executing tasks to achieve specific goals within a defined timeline.
It’s like conducting an orchestra to ensure all the instruments play in harmony to create a beautiful symphony of success.
